Out of the 543 seats in the Lok Sabha, the Lower House of the Indian Parliament, 80 seats are from Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state. In the recent 2024 Indian National Election, BJP faced a shock defeat to the Samajwadi Party, as BJP won 33 seats to SP's 37. This is further highlighted by BJP losing in the Ayodha-Faizabad constituency, where the new Ram Mandir - a temple consecrating the birthplace of Lord Ram- was built, as the Ram Mandir was a large part of the BJP manifesto and their religious majoritiarian rhetoric. Many view this as people in Uttar Pradesh rejecting religious politics. However the Samajwadi Party has been associated with lawlessness, corruption, lack of order, and have also used caste based rhetoric as a means to campaign. *Victory in this motion refers to them winning more seats than BJP, and not them winning the state elections. The BJP is the current state government and the next state elections are in 2026.
